The Mission of the Pleasant Valley Police Department is to protect life and property, to prevent disorder, and to ensure the free flow of traffic throughout the community. The department is committed to building positive relationships with both the resident and business communities in ensuring that Pleasant Valley is a safe place to live, work, and visit.
The Village of Pleasant Valley was founded in 1961 and became a 4th Class City in 1963. At that time, the police department consisted of an elected Marshall and three police officers.
Today, the twenty-five person department is managed by a career, professional Chief of Police. The Chief is appointed annually by the Mayor with the consent of the Board of Aldermen. Chief Gordon Abraham currently leads the department.
In addition to the Chief of Police, current staffing consists of nine full time Police Officers, four part-time Reserve Police Officers who assist with Municipal Court security, special events, and projects, and nine full and part time Police/Fire/EMS Public Safety Communications Officers.
In 2014, there were 47 Reported Part I Crimes, which was a 13% reduction from the previous year. The department responded to 1,943 Calls for Service and made 4,340 arrests. Those arrests included City Criminal Code Violations, City and Outside Warrants, Failure to Appears, Nuisance Codes, and Traffic Violations.
In addition, the department filed 59 State Level cases with the Clay County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
